Artist's Description
We must remember to express gratitude for those who support us in this life and beyond. It is a rare tradition in the Gullah culture to send an offering of gratitude by charging the soil with our prayers and pouring the soil back into the Earth. This offering is for those who are physically and nonphysically living. A person is essentially blessing the soil of those who are within it, blessing Mother Earth for the wealth that She provides, and blessing your steps with gratitude for always being guided in love.
However, a similar practice is done during funerals as the loved one descends into the ground. Prayers and soil are sprinkled onto the person usually followed by the words- "Ashes to Ashes, Dust to Dust."

Business name is now "Sabreee's Gullah Art Gallery" Patricia Elaine Sabree, {formally Patricia Elaine McFadden} is the product of Lake City, a small country town carved from the dark earth, located in the low country of South Carolina. Lake City is known for its amazing crop raising, dusky flatland, muddy-swamp wetland, endless fishing, surplus of snakes, and the Gullah people culture. Even though now divorced, Sabree kept her married name, "Sabree" due to its meaning, "one who preseveres until the job is done," and the connection it gave to her two lovely daughters- Faridah and Ameenah.
