Artist's Description

We must remember to express gratitude for those who support us in this life and beyond. It is a rare tradition in the Gullah culture to send an offering of gratitude by charging the soil with our prayers and pouring the soil back into the Earth. This offering is for those who are physically and nonphysically living. A person is essentially blessing the soil of those who are within it, blessing Mother Earth for the wealth that She provides, and blessing your steps with gratitude for always being guided in love.

However, a similar practice is done during funerals as the loved one descends into the ground. Prayers and soil are sprinkled onto the person usually followed by the words- "Ashes to Ashes, Dust to Dust."

Sabree and her fourteen siblings spent most of their youth working on a farm. Their parents were loyal sharecroppers who...
